MUSIC THERAPY SERVICES

BSI provides music therapy services to those individuals enrolled in the Family Support (FS) and Community Integration and Habilitation (CIH) waivers through Indiana Medicaid, as well as individuals/organizations choosing to pay for these services privately. The American Music Therapy Association defines music therapy as “the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.”  BSI’s board certified music therapists create therapeutic music experiences specifically to encourage improvement in non-musical goal areas including behavioral, physical, psychological, communicative, sensory, motor, cognitive, and/or social.

Description of Services

All music therapy sessions are unique to enhance an individual’s abilities and develop skills in an area of need, while utilizing an individual’s music preferences to increase motivation. Sessions typically occur once a week for 30-60 minutes based on the individual’s needs. A session usually occurs on an individual basis, but group options may be explored. An individual does not need any musical skills or training to benefit from music therapy. Those receiving music therapy services through BSI can expect ongoing assessment, treatment planning, and progress reporting to continue to address needs and develop skills.

Funding Sources

Music therapy services are primarily funded through:

  • Family Support (FS) and Community Integration and Habilitation (CIH) waivers through Indiana Medicaid.  Individuals receiving waiver services are typically diagnosed with an intellectual/developmental disability and/or autism spectrum disorder.

  • Contracts with organizations, such as schools or long-term care facilities.

  • Private pay.

  • Insurance reimbursement may be available on a case-by-case basis depending on the company and policy. Anthem and United do not accept claims for music therapy.

How to Obtain Services

If seeking music therapy using Medicaid Waiver:

  • Qualified individuals should contact their assigned Waiver Case Manager and ask that a referral to receive music therapy services from BSI be submitted on the BDDS portal.

  • Once received, BSI will review the information and communicate availability to begin services or placement on a waiting list.

  • Inquiries about BSI and how we provide each service prior to referral are always welcome.

If seeking to use other funding to obtain music therapy, please contact BSI directly.
