BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES

[Not accepting new referrals at this time.]

BSI provides behavioral health services to children, adolescents, adults, and families. Behavioral health refers to the emotions and behaviors that affect the overall well-being of an individual or family.  Behavioral health services are designed to teach and reinforce appropriate or adaptive behaviors, while reducing or eliminating maladaptive behaviors.  These goals are achieved by assessing the strengths and difficulties of an individual and/or family, developing a treatment plan, establishing goals, identifying appropriate ways to achieve the goals, and evaluating treatment outcomes.

Description of Services

Modalities that are used for behavioral health services include behavior, cognitive, play, integrative, and family therapies.  Services for children incorporate parent sessions, in which caregivers are taught how to behave before, during, after, and between episodes of problem behaviors to maximize the likelihood that the child will exhibit appropriate behaviors.

BSI’s behavioral health team consists of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs), Behavior Therapists, and Behavior Specialists.  All behavioral health providers have a master’s degree and are supervised by a licensed clinical psychologist on site.

Prior to starting behavioral health services, an intake appointment will be scheduled with a Behavior Therapist or Behavior Specialist.  The purpose of the intake appointment is to determine an appropriate diagnosis and identify treatment areas.  After the intake appointment, individuals will be assigned to an appropriate therapist, if one is available, or will be placed on a waiting list until an appropriate therapist becomes available.

Behavioral difficulties that may be addressed in children and adults include:

  • Defiance (e.g., noncompliance, argumentative, lying)

  • Self-regulation difficulties (e.g., tantrums, physical and verbal aggression, or low frustration tolerance)

  • Internalizing behaviors (e.g., anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or bereavement)

  • Communication deficits (e.g., receptive speech difficulties or verbal and nonverbal delays)

  • Attention-related behaviors (e.g., short attention span, hyperactivity, or impulsivity)

  • Social skills deficits (e.g., difficulty making/keeping friends, poor play skills, or inability to read social cues)

  • Repetitive behaviors (e.g., stereotypies, ritualistic behaviors, or obsessive-compulsive behaviors)

  • Daily living skills deficits (e.g., toileting deficits, picky eater, or sleep difficulties)

Funding Sources

Behavioral health services are primarily funded by:

  • In-network commercial insurance companies, such as Anthem, Cigna, Aetna (i.e., Choice, Multi, PPO).

  • Medicaid (BSI accepts a limited number of individuals).

  • Private pay.
